Relief for Chronic Knee Pain (GAE)

What is a GAE?

The geniculate artery is one of the small arteries that supply blood to a specific part of the knee. By closing down (also known as embolizing) the specific artery, blood flow to the part of the knee causing pain and inflammation is slowed. The GAE procedure safely reduces inflamed synovial (joint) lining caused by osteoarthritis. The result is usually long-lasting pain relief, three to five years, making it easier to move the knee joint.

You are a candidate for GAE if you have:

  • Moderate to severe knee pain in one or both of your knees

  • Pain in both knees when walking upstairs or performing daily activities

  • Stiff knees when you wake up

  • Are routinely taking medications for knee pain

  • Not ready or willing to undergo a knee replacement

How long does this procedure take?

The procedure normally takes 30 minutes to one hour. We use IV conscious sedation (you’ll be relaxed but awake), during the procedure. Because of the type of medication used, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you that day.

Do I qualify for GAE?

It is best medical practice to go through basic conservative measures before considering a GAE. You are a good candidate for GAE if you have already tried at least six months of:

  1. Physical therapy
  2. Over-the-counter medications
  3. Steroids, gel, or hyaluronic acid injections
  4. Other non-invasive treatments from either your pain management or orthopedic doctor

We work with all of your medical providers to ensure patients receive the best options for care. You are also a good candidate for GAE if you have had a total knee replacement, yet still experience knee pain, and your orthopedist recommends it.

Does health insurance cover GAE?

Yes. Most insurance companies cover treatment due to osteoarthritis pain.
